Find the ingredient for your question
One moisturizer can do several jobs.
- 01
Hold water
Ingredients such as glycerin help hold water in the outer skin layer.
- 02
Soften the surface
Other ingredients help soften and smooth the skin surface. This is a different role from simply adding another watery layer.
- 03
Reduce water loss
Ingredients such as petrolatum help keep water from escaping through the surface.
A simplified illustration of ingredient roles, not a skin scan or a performance test. These roles can overlap in one formula; you do not need three separate products.
DermNet · Moisturizers ↗INGREDIENT 01 / 06 · Niacinamide
Niacinamide
Niacinamide is a form of vitamin B3 worth looking at for uneven-looking tone and texture. It also appears in moisturizers, so a separate serum is optional.
How to choose a product
Check your current cream first: it may already contain niacinamide. If you want a serum, compare its texture and other ingredients as well as its percentage. A trial of a 5% formula does not mean a 10% product works twice as well.
| Complementary roles | If dryness is another concern, consider a moisturizer with water-binding glycerin or ceramides. This addresses two different needs—tone care and moisture—not a proven boost in brightening from combining two products. |
|---|---|
| Before you choose | Products with the same headline ingredient can be quite different. Glow Serum below also contains betaine salicylate, a BHA. If you already use an exfoliating product, check what the new formula adds before choosing by percentage. |
These are product-selection suggestions based on ingredient roles, not trials of combined products. Moisturizer roles · DermNet ↗
How long should I expect to wait?
The study below followed participants for 12 weeks. Immediate softness is different from a change in uneven tone. Photos in consistent lighting can help you track your own experience, but the trial does not set a results deadline for every product.
What the research found
In 50 women aged 40–60, a moisturizer with 5% niacinamide improved several visible signs of aging over 12 weeks compared with its base. The authors were affiliated with P&G.
Bissett et al., 2004 · controlled facial study ↗The limit: This was one formula and a specific study population. It does not establish the same effect for every niacinamide product or show that a higher percentage is better.
Does more niacinamide mean better results?
The cited trial tested 5%, not a range of concentrations. Use the stated formula and directions when comparing products; do not rank them by percentage alone.

INGREDIENT 02 / 06 · Hyaluronic Acid / Sodium Hyaluronate
Hyaluronic acid
Hyaluronic acid binds water and is useful to look for in hydrating skincare. A serum containing it is not necessarily a complete moisturizer for your skin.
How to choose a product
Compare essences and serums if you want an extra light step, or a moisturizer containing it if you want fewer steps. Sodium hyaluronate is a related name you may see on the label. The number of HA types is not a performance score.
| Complementary roles | If skin still feels tight after a hydrating serum, look at your moisturizer rather than adding more serums. Holding water and reducing its loss are different jobs; a finished moisturizer may cover both. |
|---|---|
| Before you choose | “Low molecular weight” is not an automatic reason to buy. The trial below compared lotions on older adults’ legs. It did not rank facial serums by penetration depth or wrinkle reduction. |
These are product-selection suggestions based on ingredient roles, not trials of combined products. Moisturizer roles · DermNet ↗
Can an HA cleanser replace my serum?
A cleanser is rinsed away; a serum stays on. The shared ingredient does not give them the same purpose or contact time. Do not assume that a hydrating ingredient in a cleanser removes the need for moisturizing afterward.
What the research found
A four-week trial on the legs of 36 older adults found higher hydration with a low-molecular-weight HA lotion than a high-molecular-weight lotion or the base. Water loss and symptom scores did not differ significantly.
Muhammad et al., 2024 · randomized trial ↗The limit: A leg study in older adults cannot establish facial results for every serum. Molecular weight, concentration and the whole formula matter.
Are more types of hyaluronic acid better?
The number of types on a label is not a product performance score. This trial did not test whether an eight-type blend outperforms a simpler formula.

INGREDIENT 03 / 06 · Panthenol
Panthenol
Panthenol is an ingredient to look for in moisturizing products when dryness is your concern. Formulas with dexpanthenol have been studied for hydration and water loss. Look beyond a “soothing” label to the type of product it is.
How to choose a product
A gel and a dewy cream can feel different even if both contain panthenol. Compare texture if richness bothers you, and reassess your moisturizer if tightness persists. A 10% label does not establish superiority over every lower-percentage formula.
| Complementary roles | Some creams combine panthenol with squalane; others include ceramides too. Check whether one moisturizer already includes the ingredients you want before adding several bottles. |
|---|---|
| Before you choose | A panthenol cosmetic is not interchangeable with a wound-care product. Nor does “soothing” guarantee that the whole formula will suit you. Try a new finished product on a small area first. |
These are product-selection suggestions based on ingredient roles, not trials of combined products. Moisturizer roles · DermNet ↗
Are all panthenol creams heavy?
The ingredient name cannot tell you how heavy or sticky a formula feels. Other ingredients and the finished texture matter. Check the product’s texture description and official directions below.
What the research found
A randomized, blinded study of two lipid-rich formulations found improved hydration and lower water loss after seven days with dexpanthenol versus the bases.
Gehring & Gloor, 2000 · controlled topical study ↗The limit: That result belongs to the tested leave-on formulas. It does not demonstrate an identical benefit in a rinse-off cleanser or establish an ideal concentration.
Is panthenol in a cleanser equivalent to a cream?
Contact time and the rest of the formula differ. A cleanser containing panthenol should not inherit results from a leave-on cream study.

INGREDIENT 04 / 06 · Ceramide NP and other ceramides
Ceramides
Ceramides are fats found in the skin’s outer protective layer. They are worth considering when choosing a moisturizer for dryness. A useful analogy is a wall: ceramides are part of the material between the skin cells.
How to choose a product
Look for names such as Ceramide NP. Compare the whole moisturizer and a texture you will use comfortably, rather than counting ceramide types. Formulas with cholesterol and fatty acids are another option to examine.
| Complementary roles | Water-binding ingredients such as glycerin or hyaluronic acid can sit alongside ceramides in one moisturizer. You do not necessarily need a separate ceramide serum to include both roles. |
|---|---|
| Before you choose | “Barrier cream” is not a guarantee of eczema treatment. The study below tested a cream and cleanser together, not ceramide alone. Persistent dermatitis needs more than switching cosmetic ingredients. |
These are product-selection suggestions based on ingredient roles, not trials of combined products. Moisturizer roles · DermNet ↗
Does a low position on the ingredient list mean it is pointless?
List position alone cannot establish a finished product’s effectiveness. Concentration, formulation and product-specific testing also matter. Avoid concluding either “useless” or “guaranteed barrier repair” from the order alone.
What the research found
A 28-day trial in adults with moderate eczema studied a ceramide-rich cream and cleanser together. Hydration and water-loss measures improved; eczema severity did not differ between groups. The study had manufacturer involvement.
Spada et al., 2021 · randomized regimen study ↗The limit: This tests a complete two-product regimen, not isolated ceramide NP. It does not prove that any ceramide cream treats eczema.
Does a ceramide label guarantee barrier repair?
The cited evidence cannot make that guarantee. Compare the whole formula and the product-specific evidence, not just the presence of a ceramide.

INGREDIENT 05 / 06 · Centella Asiatica Extract
Centella asiatica
Centella is the botanical ingredient behind many cica products. It is an option to explore in moisturizing care for skin that feels dry or sensitive. “Cica” is not one standard formula: products can have very different compositions.
How to choose a product
Decide whether you want an extra ampoule or a moisturizer containing centella. If your cream already suits you, a light ampoule is an optional addition. If you need a moisturizer, assess its formula and texture before chasing the highest extract percentage.
| Complementary roles | Centella products may already include glycerin or panthenol. Compare a focused ampoule followed by your existing moisturizer with one cream containing several ingredients. Convenience and the missing step matter; two bottles do not automatically give a stronger effect. |
|---|---|
| Before you choose | A “100% centella extract” claim does not mean 100% madecassoside. An extract and an individual compound within it are different things. Botanical ingredients and short ingredient lists do not guarantee tolerance. |
These are product-selection suggestions based on ingredient roles, not trials of combined products. Moisturizer roles · DermNet ↗
Will cica clear red acne?
The cited trial assessed hydration and experimentally induced redness on forearms. It did not establish treatment for acne or rosacea. Persistent redness or pain is a reason to investigate the cause, rather than keep adding soothing cosmetics.
What the research found
A four-week study in 25 volunteers examined 2.5% and 5% extract formulas on the forearms. Researchers reported hydration and water-loss improvements and assessed experimentally induced redness.
Ratz-Łyko et al., 2016 · 25-person formulation study ↗The limit: Extract composition varies. A small forearm study is not proof that all cica products treat acne, rosacea or eczema.
Does a high extract percentage mean more active compounds?
An extract percentage is not automatically the percentage of a particular compound such as madecassoside. Check which substance the number describes.

INGREDIENT 06 / 06 · Glycerin / Glycerol
Glycerin
Glycerin helps hold water in the skin’s outer layer. It may not be the headline ingredient, but it has a useful moisturizing role. Check your existing products before buying another hydrating serum.
How to choose a product
Look for Glycerin on the list. You do not need to buy a separate raw ingredient to include it in your routine. Also distinguish a cleanser from a leave-on moisturizer: its presence does not make those products interchangeable.
| Complementary roles | Glycerin holds water; petrolatum helps reduce water loss. The trial below separated those contributions within a cream. You can choose a finished moisturizer covering both jobs without mixing raw ingredients yourself. |
|---|---|
| Before you choose | Glycerin on a label does not tell you how sticky or heavy the whole product will feel. Formulation and texture matter. Start by deciding whether you want a light extra layer or a cream to finish moisturizing. |
These are product-selection suggestions based on ingredient roles, not trials of combined products. Moisturizer roles · DermNet ↗
Is an expensive moisturizing ingredient better than ordinary glycerin?
Ingredient prestige and price are not hydration rankings. Compare finished products for the same step by size, price and texture, then consider whether the moisture is enough for you. The trial below did not compare budget and luxury products.
What the research found
In 51 volunteers with dry skin, a controlled forearm study separated glycerol and petrolatum contributions. Glycerol improved hydration; petrolatum reduced water loss. Measurements covered 12 hours after application.
2019 · randomized four-arm crossover study ↗The limit: Hydration and reduced water loss are different outcomes. This study did not test disease treatment or establish how every glycerin-containing cleanser performs.
Why combine several moisturizing ingredients?
In the cited formula, ingredients contributed differently to water content and water loss. A finished moisturizer can do more than one job; a single highlighted ingredient does not describe the whole product.

ROUTINE COMPATIBILITY
Can I use these ingredients together?
The six ingredients in this guide describe hydration and barrier-related roles, but the research here does not prove a “synergy” for any two finished products. Use product order to organise a routine; do not treat an ingredient list as a recipe.

What if both products have a “gentle” or “barrier” claim?
Those words do not reveal the complete formula or guarantee that two products suit the same person together. Add one new product at a time and observe the response.
STORAGE & SINGLE-INGREDIENT PRODUCTS
Storage is decided by the formula, not the headline ingredient.
For the six ingredients currently covered, our evidence review does not support a separate temperature rule for every product. Follow the package and seller directions for the exact version you buy. Keep the cap closed, avoid warm or damp storage, and note the opening date when that helps you track the product.
FDA · Shelf life and expiration dating of cosmetics ↗A finished “single-ingredient” product is not the same as a raw ingredient.
Some finished cosmetics foreground one extract, ferment or filtrate. They can be useful as a light, focused step before a moisturizer, but a “100%” or high-percentage front label still does not replace the complete ingredient list, preservation system, pH or directions. Treat this as a finished formula, not a raw material.
For concentrated finished cosmetics, follow the product’s directions for layering or mixing.
PRICE & ALTERNATIVES
Compare the cost of the step you need.
Compare the same type of product by size, price and texture. Price per mL helps compare cost, but does not measure effectiveness. Check the final price and shipping cost for your address.
Compare alternatives by the same routine step.
A serum is not a substitute for a cleanser just because both mention hyaluronic acid. Use the comparison tool to place same-step products side by side, then open the official sources before buying.

Check the version and the whole formula
Products above are grouped by their highlighted ingredients. For the full formula, check the pack sold in your country. Check which substance each percentage refers to.
A rinse-off product is a different use case
Do not transfer a leave-on cream study to a cleanser just because both contain the same ingredient. Application time, concentration and the surrounding formula differ.
Watch how your skin responds
The AAD advises testing a new product on a small area before regular use. Follow its instructions, including rinsing when directed. Stop if a reaction develops and seek medical advice for severe or persistent symptoms.
