YOUR SITUATION → YOUR CHOICE
Give every bottle a job before giving it a place
A toner, essence and serum can overlap. Their names describe formats, but do not establish three separate needs. Organize the products you already own first.
A routine is a sequence, not a shopping list.
- 01
Cleanse
Use rinse-off products as directed.
- 02
Use a targeted step if needed
Follow treatment advice and the specific serum or toner directions.
- 03
Moisturize
Choose the texture that fits this step.
- 04
Daytime sun protection
Use sunscreen according to its directions, before makeup.
Product-specific and prescribed directions take priority. Optional steps are not required purchases.
AAD · Skin care order ↗| Step | Its place in the decision | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Cleanser | Remove what needs washing off | Rinse-off directions; do not borrow leave-on instructions |
| Treatment or optional toner / serum | Address a defined need | Prescription advice takes priority; follow each formula’s order |
| Moisturizer | Choose a comfortable finishing texture | A gel and a cream may be alternatives at this step |
| Daytime sunscreen | A separate sun-protection step | Use its own amount and reapplication directions; moisturizer is not a replacement |

Build a short list before a long routine
Write down what you already use and what each item is for. The AAD’s basic sequence puts cleansing first, treatment next, then moisturizer and/or sunscreen, with makeup afterward. Follow your clinician’s directions for prescribed products. Extra steps are not automatically better, especially if you are introducing several unfamiliar formulas.
Check where that particular serum belongs
“Serum” does not identify one universal position. The US instructions for innisfree Green Tea Seed Hyaluronic Serum place it after cleanser and toner, before moisturizer. Its Japanese page presents it as a booster serum. Do not copy the US order onto the Japanese product without checking that product’s package and current directions; formula equivalence is not established here.
Use a product’s instructions as an example, not a rule for everything
Beauty of Joseon places Dynasty Cream after cleanser, toner and serum. That tells you where this cream belongs in the brand’s suggested routine; it does not mean that you must buy all three preceding products. A gel moisturizer may occupy the moisturizing step instead of a cream, rather than becoming an extra mandatory layer.
Keep track of what changes
When trying a new product, note its name, market version, amount and where you put it in the routine. That makes later impressions about pilling or a heavy finish easier to interpret. Follow the sunscreen’s own application and reapplication directions rather than treating moisturizer as a substitute.
A few useful answers
Must toner always come before serum?
No. Some products have a different intended place, including booster serums. Read the instructions for your specific product.
Do I need every step shown in a brand’s routine?
No. A suggested sequence is not a shopping requirement. Choose steps for a clear need and avoid duplicating the same role without a reason.
Do I need a separate Korean skincare routine for day and night?
Not automatically. Keep the basic order short and use each product as directed. Daytime sun protection belongs in the daytime routine; choose extra steps only when they serve a clear purpose.
